Pennsylvania has a long history of growing quality apples and is the fourth largest producer in the country. From Adams County in southern PA to Erie County in the northwest, you’ll find growers who are working fifth, sixth, and even seventh generation farms, producing both commercial favorite varieties, like Gala and Red Delicious, as well as lesser-known heirloom varieties, like Smokehouse and Winter Banana.
Today, there are over 21,000 acres of Pennsylvania land bearing apples. About 35% are produced for fresh market, while 65% are used for processed products, including canned, juice and cider.
While apples are grown in all of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, the state’s top-producing counties are Adams, Franklin, Bedford, York, Berks, Lehigh, Lancaster, Snyder, Schuylkill, Cumberland, Erie, Lycoming, Centre, Columbia, and Chester.
